Making the Most of a Home Visit/Inspection:

Firefighter Neighborhood Outreach Training

This training was originally developed for the Rochester, NY Fire Department, funded by a Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant, to enhance firefighters' effectiveness when interacting with the citizens they serve.

There are thousands of smoke alarm programs throughout the country. Firefighters need to know how to make these programs effective, especially for high-risk populations. This training:

• Was designed with input from firefighters on what they need in their jobs;
• Provides high-impact, to-the-point training in 1 hour;
• Covers motivation and rapport building as well as content;
• Is designed to be sustainable, including free resources available from www.homefiredrill.org and the ongoing educational campaign Change Your Clock; Check Your Batteries; Practice Your Home Fire Drill; www.homefiredrill.org™

Content includes:

• Local data;
• Specific ways to address the top 5 causes of home fires;
• Simple evidence-based techniques to motivate people not to remove batteries.
• Strategies for overcoming barriers to changing behavior to improve home safety;
• Viewing and discussion of the video Home Fire Drill: Does Your Family Know What to Do?,which demonstrates why many people do not have a rehearsed home exit plan. and the interactive animated teaching game Help Mikey Make It Out, both of which are available on an ongoing basis at www.homefiredrill.org
• Home visit and home safety checklists.
